About the Breed

The Rough Collie, also known as the Long-Haired Collie, is a graceful and intelligent herding dog that originated in Scotland. Originally bred for sheep herding, the breed is highly trainable, loyal, and affectionate, making it an excellent family companion. Rough Collies became internationally famous through the Lassie series, further highlighting their intelligence and devotion.

Physically, the Rough Collie is characterized by its elegant, long, and dense double coat, which protects them from harsh weather. Coat colors include sable and white, tricolor, blue merle, and white with color markings. Their distinctive long snout, expressive almond-shaped eyes, and semi-pricked ears give them a refined and friendly appearance.

Collies are gentle, affectionate, and intelligent dogs that thrive on companionship and mental stimulation. They are eager to please, making them easy to train, and they do well in obedience, agility, and therapy work. While generally good with children and other animals, they can be sensitive to loud noises and abrupt changes. Regular socialization and positive reinforcement training help them develop into well-adjusted family pets.

Although generally healthy, Rough Collies are prone to certain genetic health conditions, such as collie eye anomaly (CEA), hip dysplasia, and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA). Regular veterinary check-ups, a nutritious diet, and consistent exercise are essential to maintain their well-being. Due to their long coat, regular brushing (at least twice a week) is necessary to prevent matting and excessive shedding.

The Rough Collie is an elegant, intelligent, and affectionate breed, well-suited for families and active individuals. Their loyal and gentle nature, combined with their beauty and trainability, makes them a cherished companion for those willing to provide the love, care, and mental engagement they need.
