About the Breed

The Entlebucher Mountain Dog, also known as the Entlebucher Sennenhund, is the smallest of the four Swiss mountain dog breeds. Originating from the Entlebuch Valley in Switzerland, this breed was historically used for herding and driving cattle in the Swiss Alps. Known for its intelligence, agility, and strong work ethic, the Entlebucher remains a highly active and versatile working dog.

Physically, the breed is compact and muscular, featuring a short, dense, tri-colored coat with black, white, and tan markings. The small, triangular ears and dark brown, expressive eyes contribute to its alert and friendly expression. Some dogs naturally have a short tail (bobtail), while others have a long tail.

The temperament of the Entlebucher Mountain Dog is energetic, intelligent, and loyal. They are highly trainable but require consistent leadership due to their independent nature. Their strong herding instincts make them well-suited for dog sports like agility, obedience, and herding trials. They are protective but affectionate and form strong bonds with their families. However, early socialization is necessary to ensure they get along well with strangers and other animals.

Despite being a generally healthy breed, Entlebucher Mountain Dogs can be prone to hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA). Responsible breeding and regular veterinary check-ups help ensure a long and healthy life.

The Entlebucher Mountain Dog is a high-energy, intelligent, and devoted breed, ideal for active families who can provide plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. Their strong work ethic and loving nature make them excellent companions for those who appreciate a loyal and active dog.
